TYPE DESCRIPTION PRICE

Smooth, medium to dark brown. Virtually free of contact marks, although there's a small, linear dig left of the lower curl and small rim tics at K1 and K7 on the obverse. Well struck on the reverse, except at NT of CENT, which is weak but readable. Dubbed the "Apple Cheeks" variety by Sheldon, due to Miss Liberty's exceptionally round, full cheeks. A common variety, but always a collector favorite due to the well-executed and immediately recognizable obverse. A splendid cent.

VF20. Inv #P0150
$1995

Medium to dark steel brown. Very well worn. Nice smooth planchet, with several tiny henpecks on both sides. Braided Hair, or Heavy Locks, variety. Top half of date is clear. Earlier die state before the cracks at the date start to form.

FR2+. Inv #T1475
$175

Medium to dark olive brown and steel. Date figures are "crudely made", with parallel die cracks bisecting the date, one crack exiting the 8 to the rim to the right. Another crack starts at the tip of the bust and extends upward into the field. A R4+ variety; one of the very tough 1798s. Breen die state III, medium to late die state. Comes with a Grellman card graded G5.

G5. Inv #T1551
$495

Medium to dark tan and steel; recolored. Some light old hairlines hidden in Miss Liberty's hair. Tiny reverse rim tick K2. The break behind the curls is strong. Reverse is extremely well struck, lacking the swelling normally seen in the legends. A very tough variety at R4+, and a popular one due to the distinctive break. Definitely in the extended condition census, with CC#15 VG8, CC#19 VG7, and CC#23 G6.

F15 net VG8+. Inv #P0216
$850

Medium to dark brown, with a darker streak through the left obverse field. Some light obverse hairlines. Full bust outline and strong date. Middle die state with reverse crack through UNI. Old rim scrape over ER(ICA). Two of the three errors show; the denominator is worn away.

AG3. Inv #T1460

VG7. Inv #T1643
$40

A common variety, but one of the more popular middle dates due to the unique 15-star obverse. Smooth medium to dark steel. Struck with misaligned dies causing the bottom left side of the obverse and the top side of the reverse to unevenly wear, obliterating several of the stars. The date and die break under the ear are clear.

Light to medium brown with some mottled darker toning, subtle on the obverse and more prominent on the reverse. No noticeable wear, but lacks the mint frost that would merit an AU grade. VF30 net VF20+. Inv #T1640
$44

$32

Medium to slightly darker brown with some nice woodgrain on the reverse. Light obverse rim bump K9. Grellman's die state "c" (earlier die states show repunching under 853.) Obverse misaligned to K9, often found in this die state. Misaligned obverses are a feature peculiar to 1853 cents.

VF25+. Inv #T1528
