1818 Large Cent N7 Obv Cracks
1818 Large Cent. N-7. Rarity 1. Matron Head. MDS(b). PCGS AU58. CAC. EAC AU50. Purchased this unattributed N7 in the on-line only section of this auction. The signature portion of this auction had a CC10ish N7, lot number 3089 which sold for $2,800 ($3,290 with BP) which bested my $2,600 bid. For a R1 coin, I am happy to have this attractive MDS AU50 example and keep $2,500 for another day. The obverse surfaces are clean with crumbling around the rims. The color is coffee with light cream throughout on both sides with slightly less cream on the reverse. The diagnostic crack connecting star 6 and 7 is clear along with the die state B indicators which are the obverse crack from the top crown through star 5 to the rim as well as the crack from star 1 towards the 1 in the date. In later die states the crack connects with the 1 but not here. A crack connects the 181 in the date. The triple denticle at star 4 is not visible. An almost non-discernable scratch follows the jawline up through the ear. The reverse crack above the O in OF is only beginning to show and the defective right foot of the T in CENT is obvious. The rims are soft on the reverse as well and has a few scattered spots, but not distracting from the overall appeal. A pretty woman with freckles is still a pretty woman, in fact the freckles are reminders of her uniqueness. Provenance: HNA #1212, December 7, 2014 Lot 7062.
