1797 Large Cent S-124 EDS
Medium to dark brown with good color. Smooth hard surfaces. Several large pits or voids on both sides, which blend in perfectly with the surrounding patina, and some old faint reverse scratches that also blend in. Early die state, Breen I or II, with a full strong date, and perhaps only a hint of die swelling starting to form in this area. A rare variety at R5+, and tied for the toughest Sheldon-numbered variety of the year if you don't count the plain edge S-121. This is the first example of S-124 I've had the privilege to offer, and most of these surface-wise are pretty wretched. This one has great surfaces; without the pits it would be in the top 10 in the condition census, as the two finest known examples are VF20 and F15, both of these net graded due to porosity.
F12 net G6.
